The heavy metal lead is toxic, and is often found in our homes, schools, drinking water and soil. We unknowingly ingest and inhale lead from our drinking water and house dust. There is no safe level for lead in children's bodies - this is a widely accepted scientific fact. Long-term health impacts of lead include loss of IQ, learning disabilities, poor impulse control, stunted growth and development, difficulties with hearing and speech, and organ damage.
The good news is that all lead poisoning is preventable.
Our state has fought long and hard to regulate and protect New York's families from lead, yet we still have the highest childhood lead poisoning cases in the nation.
It is time to act. The New York State Senate and Assembly should not adjourn without passing four key policies to prevent lead poisoning. Use the form below to write to Senate Majority Leader Andrea Stewart-Cousins and Assembly Speaker Carl Heastie and urge them to ensure floor votes for S.2141/A.6608, S.2122/A.160, S.6554/A.7117 and S.3079/A.7488.
